Microsoft is adding native support for MCP Server in Windows 11
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard that enables AI agents or AI applications to connect to and interact with users’ data resources. These data resources can be local files, databases, or tools like Google Maps etc. Since this integration will offer a standardized framework for AI agents, connecting Windows apps with AI agents will become seamless.
According to Microsoft, this integration will be available in a private developer preview with select partners in the coming months. The primary purpose of this private release is to gather input, suggestions, and bug reports from developers. This feedback will help Microsoft improve this feature before its public release.
Since MCP servers enable AI agents to access users’ data, privacy and security become paramount concerns that require robust safeguards and transparent user controls. That’s why agents’ access to the MCP server will be disabled by default. Once enabled, all sensitive actions performed by the agent(s) on behalf of the user will be auditable and transparent.
Components of the MCP Platform on Windows
Microsoft will introduce the following components in the MCP platform on Windows:
- MCP Registry for Windows
- MCP Servers for Windows
The MCP Registry will be the single, secure, and trustworthy source for AI agents to access MCP Servers on Windows. Developers can make desired capabilities in their apps available via the MCP Registry in Windows.
The MCP Servers for Windows will include Windows system functionalities like the File System, Windows Subsystem for Linux, etc.
The complete details are available on the official blog post of Microsoft.
