Interesting about Western technology and ISPs insofar as Pakistan...thank you! With Comcast in Oregon, USA, you either use their WIFI modem or your own THEY have to have online access to; starting in March 2013, I've become aware via "Shields UP!" et al that my modem now stealths all ports but leaves its own 25, 80, and 443 showing "Closed" these days (instead of "Stealthed")...I can't get that to change, try as I might, as a "mere consumer". I'm fortunate enough to always have my PC et al operating securely as if always on untrusted networks, but that's hardly everyone's case. I think that wherever one finds uber-data mining, the purpose may be more like Pakistan's...incumbent security...rather than any concern whatsoever for protecting the public from physical or financial loss...look how easily berserkers, terrorists, and Zeus/malware have pulled off things against citizens of so many nations, Police State or not.
