Microsoft, in its awareness-based announcement of the End of Support for Windows 10, which will happen in Oct 2025, mentioned that if you are an organization that is still not ready to upgrade to Windows 11 because of multiple reasons, including the software transition, you will need to purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU) for $30, which is available for one year. That way, your Windows will stay secure from any vulnerability impacting your business and data.
Windows 10 users will have to purchase ESU for $30
The ESU program is not new. Microsoft has done it for its previous versions like Windows 7, and a few products, considering that it may not be easy for every business to quickly move to the latest version. That said, ESUs are short-term solutions, and they also come to an end.
Businesses can opt into the ESU through Azure infrastructure (free for VMs) or volume licensing for on-premises and hybrid environments.
How does this affect Windows 10 Users?
- End of Support: Starting October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will not receive software updates, security updates, or technical support.
- ESU Option: Microsoft will offer a one-year ESU option for $30. This will ensure continued security updates but may or may not exclude new feature updates.
Microsoft is encouraging users to adopt Windows 11, highlighting its improved security features and modern user interface. However, this will take a long time and eventually happen when no other option is left.
If you are still not convinced, you should check out some of the best features of Windows 11, and start preparing for a transition which will also secure your business and data.
If you are not ready to upgrade to Windows 11, it’s time to plan to spend $30 every year to ensure you get the security updates.
