Microsoft has introduced a new Copilot Tasks feature to its AI ecosystem, marking a significant move towards autonomous task execution. This new feature gives Copilot the ability to execute tasks and automate actions on behalf of users, making it more than a traditional AI chatbot.

Copilot Tasks: Turning an AI Chatbot into a Personal Assistant
Copilot Tasks allows users to assign specific instructions that Copilot can carry out across multiple applications, making it more than an AI tool focused on text and image generation. Currently, Microsoft launched Copilot Tasks as a preview and made it available to a small group of users to get real-world feedback, so Microsoft can make necessary changes before releasing it to a large audience. Users who want to test it can join the waitlist.
Key use cases of Copilot Tasks
Microsoft designed Copilot Tasks to handle a variety of personal and professional tasks. Here are some use cases of Copilot Tasks.
- Recurring tasks: Copilot Tasks helps simplify your workflow by automating recurring tasks, such as drafting replies to urgent emails, unsubscribing from promotional emails you have not opened for a long time, generating a summary of important meetings, etc.
- Document generation: Copilot Tasks can help students prepare for their exams better by turning the syllabus into a structured study plan with practice sets. For working professionals, Copilot Tasks can convert emails, attachments, and images from their mailboxes into polished presentations with charts and talking points. It also helps find new job listings that match your skill set and experience, making the job search easier than before.
- Shopping, services, and appointments: If you are planning a birthday party, assign the task to Copilot Tasks, and it will find and book a venue for you. It can also search for top-rated service providers in your area, such as plumbers, contractors, etc.
How to use Copilot Tasks in Windows 11
To use Copilot Tasks, you have to enable Copilot Actions. It is currently available in Copilot Labs for Windows Insiders, but will be released to all shortly.
- Having done that, give a Task Command by using natural language.
- Copilot will interpret the command and start executing it. It could be something like Organize my downloads folder by file type.
- Copilot will show you a preview of actions taken, which you can approve, edit, or cancel.
- Once the job is done, you have to Review and Confirm.
You can also connect it to Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, or other apps for cross‑account automation.
Copilot Tasks is an automated to-do list. You just have to describe your requirements in your natural language, Copilot will start working in the background, and report back when it is done. It is not an Autopilot system, as the final decision always remains in your hands. Before executing meaningful tasks, such as spending money or sending a message on your behalf, Copilot Tasks always asks for your consent.
