Last year, Microsoft bought VirusTotal support for ‘Process Explorer’. Now Autoruns is the one to get the ontegration. VirusTotal is an online virus scanning service that helps to analyze suspicious files and URLs and make it easier to recognize worms, virus and other type of malware.
With the recent release of Autorun v13.0, here comes an important and major update of VirusTotal integration. The status of entries that are shown have gone through dozens of antivirus scanning of the VT.
Mark Russinovich, Technical Fellow in the Cloud and Enterprise Division at Microsoft, mentioned,
“This major update to Autoruns, an autostart execution point (ASEP) manager, now has integration with Virustotal.com to show the status of entries with respect to scans by over four dozen antimalware engines. It also includes a revamped scanning architecture that supports dynamic filters, including a free-form text filter, a greatly improved compare feature that highlights not just new items but deleted ones as well, and file saving and loading that preserves all the information of a scan”
SysInternals Autoruns is one of the best free available tools to show up the items that are configured to run during the start up of the Windows. With Autoruns, monitoring and controlling of startup items are much easier as compared to other tools of the same category. Now, getting the update of VirusTotal integration is a major improvement.
In order to scan the entries shown by Autorun you just need to do is to click on an entry and select the option “Check VirusTotal”. To use the features of Virustotal, you need to agree the terms of service of VirusTotal. As soon as you are done, Autorun will quickly query the VirusTotal service and in few seconds result will be displayed in front of you.
You can also activate the scan option for all entries. To do so, you need to go to Options, click on Scan Options and then select ‘Check VirusTotal.com’ and ‘Submit Unknown Images’. This will give the scan result for all entries.
Integration of VirusTotal with this advanced startup manager, Autoruns v13, is truly a great update as it will allow you to assess the safety of the startup items safely.
