As a part of its continuous effort to modernize software and services under fluent design, Microsoft will roll out redesigned icons for its several software, products & services. The current Windows 10 logo bears sharp edges and a single layer of blue color over equally sized 4 squares. The redesigned Windows 10 logo will sport multiple shades of blue.
Over 100 icons for Windows, Office, etc, have been redesigned
Microsoft will redesign the icons for more than 100 apps.
Last year, we rolled out the new Office icons to show our customers that we’ve evolved our products to support the changing world of work. A world where, despite being more mobile than ever before, social connectedness and collaboration are paramount to success. A world with immense potential for creativity and growth thanks to new flows of information, wrote Jon Friedman, Corporate vice president of design and research at Microsoft.
In addition to making the logos lively and vibrant in appearance, there is an emphasis on making the icons three dimensional as well. The designers from Microsoft are currently working on this and are busy making required changes to the OS applications.
The change was not sudden but inspired by feedback from users. People working at Microsoft learned that earlier change of flat design and muted colors didn’t quite work and had failed to resonate with users’ expectations. As such, the company decided to work on the newest wave of icon redesigns.
In the process, however, the software giant faced two major creative challenges. First, it needed to signal innovation and change while maintaining familiarity for customers. Secondly, it had to develop a more flexible and open design system to span a range of contexts while still being true to Microsoft.
