avast! one of the leading security suite provider has launched a program that promises to give enterprise-level protection to schools for free. The Free for education program from avast! is providing Endpoint Protection Suite to schools for protecting their networks.

The freemium suite has been designed to keep users away from risky and fraudulent sites. So, it supports both, antivirus scanning and file reputation detection. It is actually an extension of the home-based free protection to the educational sector.
The educational license for Endpoint Suite includes two central management control options, which enables IT administrators to manage all installations from a central console. The criteria for installing the suite has been highlighted below:
Public or non-profit educational institution / education organization (this includes grades K-12 and higher, vocational / trade schools, head start programs or other entities with educational purposes under 501(c) of the IRS Publication 557 – Organization Reference Chart section) or public library, operating in the United States (includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
School IT security administrators interested in installing the Endpoint Suite can apply for the program by filling out Avast’s online form.

As of now, avast! Endpoint Protection Suite supports only Windows OS. Support for Mac OS X is likely to be added in the first quarter of 2013.
