When Facebook comes to know about a person’s death, he memorializes the account with given few controls in the hand of the legacy contact. These controls are as follows-
- Selected legacy contact can write a post at the top of the memorialized Timeline
- Can update profile picture and cover photo
- Can respond to a new friend requests from people who were not connected earlier
Vanessa Callison-Burch, Product Manager, Jasmine Probst, Content Strategist and Mark Govea, Software Engineer, mentioned at the Facebook newsroom,
“Today we’re introducing a new feature that lets people choose a legacy contact—a family member or friend who can manage their account when they pass away.”
They also mentioned,
“If someone chooses, they may give their legacy contact permission to download an archive of the photos, posts and profile information they shared on Facebook. Other settings will remain the same as before the account was memorialized. The legacy contact will not be able to log in as the person who passed away or see that person’s private messages.”
There is no compulsion that one needs to select legacy contact only. If a person wants to delete his/her account permanently they can do so by informing Facebook about it. Below are the steps that one needs to take in order to select the legacy contact.
- Open Settings and then click on Legacy Contact at the bottom of the page.
- Select the legacy contact. Facebook also gives you the option to send a message to the selected person.
- If you want, you can restrict the permission given to legacy contact to download an archive of the posts, photos and profile info you’ve shared on Facebook.
Facebook has also made changes in the memorialized profiles by adding ‘Remembering’ option just above the name of a person who had died.
By introducing these new features, Facebook has really made a valiant effort to make people remember there near and dear ones. Right now these features are only available in US. In future it may be rolled to other countries, stay tuned!.
