HoloLens is a big deal to Microsoft, something that will not change for a long time to come. With that being the case, it is clear why Legendary Studios, a company behind several top Hollywood movies, has decided to adopt HoloLens for entertainment purposes.
The plan here, from what we have come to understand, is to have fans use HoloLens to turn their favorite characters into holograms they can interact with. We’re not sure on what scale this will be done, but whatever the case, Microsoft will benefit in a huge way.
“Microsoft HoloLens lets us bring characters from the worlds we create into the real world,” says Emily Castel, Chief Marketing Officer at Legendary. “Our fans get to interact and have fun with our characters in a completely new way, giving them a unique experience they can share with their friends through video and social media. This is exciting for us, and for the creators we work with.”
Microsoft believes that HoloLens can take off commercially if fans movie studios and fans alike, use the platform to create mixed reality movies. This could very well be the beginning, but seeing as HoloLens is not yet ready for prime time, we have to take a wait and see approach.
During the premier of the movie, Warcraft, fans got the chance to meet Orgrim Doomhammer, a character in the movie, through HoloLens. A short video below shows what fans got to see, and how things could be done in the future if Microsoft can get enough backers.
With HoloLens, creators now have more than one way to make holograms, whether characters are played by actors or are CG-based. To capture actors and real objects as holograms, we use a holographic video capture studio.
The future of HoloLens is looking bright, but it is up to Microsoft to make sure it happens according to plan.
