The entire internet is confused about the rebranding of Microsoft Office. People on some social media websites, including Reddit and X, are posting that Microsoft has renamed Office, even some websites are also claiming the same. But the question is — is it really true? Has Microsoft actually renamed Microsoft Office to the Microsoft Office 365 app? In this article, I will try to uncover the truth behind this confusion.

Has Microsoft renamed Office to Microsoft 365 Copilot app?
You might have seen some posts on social media claiming that Microsoft has renamed the Microsoft Office suite to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. These posts are creating confusion among Microsoft Office users. Users have also replied to such posts, saying they are unhappy about the Office rebranding. But how did all this confusion start in the first place?

If you visit office.com or microsoft365.com URLs, you will see the following heading:
Welcome to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app (formerly Office) lets you create, share, and collaborate all in one place with your favorite apps now including Copilot.
The heading “Welcome to Microsoft 365 Copilot app” and the text “formerly Office” are creating confusion. After seeing this heading, many netizens jumped to the conclusion that Microsoft has changed the name of the Office suite to Microsoft 365 Copilot app. However, just changing one heading is not enough to conclude that Microsoft has rebranded Office.

If you scroll down the same page, you will see some FAQs.
The Microsoft Office app is now Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 (formerly Microsoft Office 365) is a subscription service that offers a suite of productivity tools and cloud-based services from Microsoft.
The statement and question in the FAQ contradict each other. According to the question, the Microsoft Office app is now called Microsoft 365 Copilot. However, the statement to this question states that Microsoft Office 365 is now Microsoft 365.

Moreover, if you sign into your Microsoft subscription account, you will see Microsoft 365 as the product name. The same will be displayed if you click on the Buy Microsoft 365 button.
What is Microsoft 365 Copilot app?
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is a single place to access all Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc.

All users can install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on their Windows computers, where they can access all Office apps. However, the Copilot Chat in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers. Non-subscribers can use a separate Copilot app on Windows 11.

On the official webpage, Microsoft confirmed that the Microsoft 365 (Office) app is now called the Microsoft 365 Copilot app across the web, mobile, and Windows. However, the Microsoft 365 plans and pricing page still uses Microsoft 365 with Microsoft 365 Copilot as an additional option.
Conclusion
Microsoft has not made any recent naming changes to its Office apps.
Said Gareth Oystryk, Senior Director of Marketing, Microsoft 365:
We have not made any recent naming changes to our Office apps. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the Office apps within the Microsoft 365 productivity suite, remain unchanged.
In November 2022, we renamed only the Office “hub” app for web and mobile to the Microsoft 365 app. In January 2025, we updated it to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app to reflect its role in bringing Copilot and Microsoft 365 productivity experiences together in one place.
We hope this clarifies the subject.
