Finally, the time has come for Microsoft to force update computers that still run Windows 10 May 2019 (version 1903) software, which is around for nearly 18 months now, to v1909. This comes amid Windows 10 v 1903 inching towards End of Life (EOL) by the end of this year. More importantly, Windows 10 v 1903 is set to receive its last Patch Tuesday update on December 8, 2020.
Microsoft to force upgrade Windows 1903 computers
As a result, Microsoft will now opt for automatic updates, something that has been long pending. Microsoft has the policy to force update users, especially when they are using a computer with a Windows version that is about to reach End of Life.
Even though the automatic upgrade period usually starts nearly six months in advance, Microsoft chose to postpone the forced upgrade in the wake of the Covid-19. The decision to postpone the forced upgrade was taken so that network admins don’t have to bear the additional burden in terms of the increased workload amid the pandemic situation.
Earlier this year, Microsoft officially extended support for Windows 10 version 1809 until November this year. Following the announcement in April this year, the company started the automatic upgrade period for users with Windows 10 v 1809 in June this year.
Given the fact that end-of-life for Windows 10 v 1809 and Windows 10 v 1903 is only a month apart, Microsoft should have ideally started force-upgrading Windows 10 v 1903 computers in July 2020, something obviously did not happen.
In the meantime, Microsoft shipped the Windows 10 October 2020 (20H2) update, which according to the company is available to users on version 1903 or higher. As a result, eligible users on Widows 10 v 1903 and higher can manually receive the update for installation. However, in recent days, users upgrading from older versions of Windows 10 to some of the most recent versions of Windows 10 are facing certain compatibility issues.
Microsoft will not automatically upgrade users on version 1903 to a newer version (version 1909). Interestingly, Microsoft is not yet willing to directly upgrade 1903 users to 2004 or 20H2. It looks like Microsoft wants to take things slow when it comes to updating systems. Eventually, Microsoft will want to force-upgrade Windows 10 1909 users to v 2004 and so on.
