In the past years, cyberattacks exploiting the vulnerabilities in display driver software have increased a lot. As a result, experts don’t recommend running an older version of the display driver software for a Windows or Linux computer. Emphasizing this point once again, NVIDIA has released a significant update fixing display driver vulnerabilities on Microsoft Windows and Linux distributions.

Bad GPU Driver Update causing problems? NVIDIA says its latest GeForce update should prevent the GeForce-powered computers from potential DDoS attacks, data tampering, and information disclosure issues. Customers can download the latest version of the drivers from the official webpage of NVIDIA.
The said GeForce drivers updates are called 461.09 for Microsoft Windows and 460.32.03 for Linux distros. Both these versions have now been made available for download. While the manufacturer claims to have patched a total of six vulnerabilities found in systems, the most important one concerns the kernel mode layer handler for DxgkDdiEscape.
Regarding the CVSS vulnerability scale, this one has been rated 8.4, which is problematic. Hackers could exploit this vulnerability alone to perform DDoS attacks on a bunch of systems. Similarly, unauthorized escalation of privileges and data tampering attacks could also be conducted by controlling the said issue.
In addition to the main issue, NVIDIA has fixed some problems specific to GPU models. For instance, on the devices running GeForce GTX 750Ti, the update would patch the blue-screen crash issue. On the other hand, if you have a computer running the GeForce GTX 1080Ti, this driver update would eliminate the flicker issue on desktop and display-freezing issues.
NVIDIA has addressed problems found in specific computer models, like the Lenovo Y740 notebook. Despite all these, the focus is on the vulnerabilities, which may turn harmful to privacy/security if the attacker has local access to the devices.
Therefore, even if you don’t have the specific models with a reported issue, it is better to upgrade the display software drivers for your NVIDIA GeForce GPU to the latest version. So, even in a worst-case scenario where an attacker has gained access to your computer, you don’t have to worry about these vulnerabilities.
