Microsoft announced today Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14257 for PCs in the Fast ring. Just last week Microsoft had released Build 14251 . As promised by Microsoft, with increased pace of the Fast ring releases, this build is only 6 revs newer than the last build. This means fewer big changes between these builds. Microsoft is at the start of new development cycle for next feature update to Windows 10. New feature work is in early stages and the changes in this build mainly are about laying the foundation for those features to be incorporated into builds. There’s lots of coding work going on so one can expect these new features to reflect in future builds gradually.
Issues fixed in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14257
There are lots of bug fixes from Windows teams and also from those reported by Insiders.
- Memory related app errors causing periodic app crashes issues has been resolved.
- The Connect button is back again in Action Center, which was missing in previous build.
- Developer tools F12 issue in Microsoft Edge is resolved so they will load correctly.
- Issue of suggested apps being shown on Start menu even after they being turned off under Settings > Personalization > Start is fixed now.
- Lock screen issue of when trying to change the picture with “Get fun facts, tips, tricks and more on your lock screen’’ turned on reverting back to default is resolved.
- Issue of Desktop icons getting jumbled up after switching DPI settings from 100% to 150 or 175% is fixed now.
- Issue of not working of pasting files into .zip files in File Explorer also fixed.
Known issues in Build 14257:
With so many bugs fixed in this build, there remains many more issues.
- Avoid resetting your PC on this build: Choosing ‘Reset This PC’ under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery will make your PC in an unstable state. There is no workaround if your PC gets into this state and one will have to reinstall Windows. So avoid resetting on this build. One can though rollback to the previous build if just in case this build doesn’t work for you. This issue will be fixed in next build.
- You might see WSClient.dll error which was mentioned in earlier build also. Check for the workaround here.
- Unable to use Windows Hello or any other app that uses front-facing camera as the front-facing camera is unusable on PCs with Intel RealSense.
- UI issue where Airplane mode will incorrectly show as ‘ON’ even though PC’s wifi is powered on. This is due to a timing issue between how the UI communicates and waits for the underlying platform to respond. You can toggle the Airplane Mode on and off to get Airplane Mode back to showing the correct state.
