Sundar Pichai is the new CEO of Google. The announcement was made today morning by the company’s co-founder Larry Page. Larry also announced the formation of a new umbrella firm called as Alphabet, of which other companies will be a part including Google.
Larry Page mentioned on Google Official blog,
“I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations. I have been spending quite a bit of time with Sundar, helping him and the company in any way I can, and I will of course continue to do that. Google itself is also making all sorts of new products, and I know Sundar will always be focused on innovation — continuing to stretch boundaries”.
43 year old, Sundar Pichai will oversee the operations of restructured Google that will include some of company’s most popular products including its Google search engine, Google ads, Gmaps, apps, YouTube and Android operating system.
Sundar Pichai – Early days
Born in India, Sundar Pichai spent his childhood days in the South Indian capital, Chennai schooling from PSBB and VanaVani. He completed his Metallurgical Engineering from India’s Engineering school, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur). He then went on to complete Master of Science from Stanford University and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Pichai went on to work as an engineer at manufacturer Applied Materials, and later on took up a role in management consulting at McKinsey & Company before joining Google.
Life at Google
Pichai joined Google in 2004 and became a part of its product management team overlooking innovation efforts on Google’s client software products. He was also a part of the team that launched the Chrome browser in 2008 and, also worked on Google other products such as Google Toolbar, Desktop Search, Gadgets, and Google Gears, Gadgets and Google Drive.
Before his elevation as CEO, Pichai was serving as SVP of Google Android, Chrome and Apps, working on consumer products.
His current role would be overseeing product management, engineering and research for Google’s products and platforms, according to Google’s filing at the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Google itself is also making all sorts of new products, and I know Sundar will always be focused on innovation — continuing to stretch boundaries. I know he deeply cares that we can continue to make big strides on our core mission to organize the world’s information, said Larry on Pichai appointment.
With his elevation, Pichai joins the ranks of other India-born CEOs like – Indra Nooyi at Pepsi, Ajit Banga at Mastercard, and Sanjay Mehrotra at SanDisk, etc.
