In a study released recently, it was found that just 5 sites captured 20% of all search activity in Q4 2012. The top 500 websites captured nearly 50%, whereas the top 1,000 websites captured nearly 75% of Search Results Clicks.
According to the 2013 Digital Marketer Report from Experian Marketing Services (Hitwise), the top five websites were – Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, Wikipedia and Amazon. These 5 sites cornered 2.7% of organic clicks from US search engines – Google, Bing & Yahoo.
Among paid search results the top 5 websites to capture paid search clicks were Amazon, eBay, eHow, BestBuy and Yahoo Shopping – they cornered around 12% of paid clicks. The top 10 around 16% and the top 500 got 56% of paid clicks.
Bloggers, website owners, marketers will thus have to work even harder to gain and maintain their position in organic search results.
