Zoom now has enough reasons to be nervous and worried about its future, especially in India. Reliance Jio’s grand debut in the country’s enterprise remote communication and video calling space gives the US-based company a run for its money. On top of that, Reliance Jio continues to raise funds with major tech companies and private equity firms including Facebook, Google, Intel, and Silverlake investing heavily in India’s fastest-growing telecom giant.
JioMeet’s grand success in India gives US-based Zoom a run for its money
JioMeet is already emerging as one of the fastest-growing enterprise video calling services. Since its launch just a few days ago, the JioMeet app has already been downloaded by more than 5 million (50 lakh) users. As a result, the glory days of Zoom in India appear to be over.
“JioMeet, since its release a few days ago has already been downloaded by more than 5 million users. It is India’s first and only cloud-based video-conferencing app. And you will be proud to know that it has been built by a young Jio Platforms team in just two months,” said Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd. at the company’s 43rd annual general meeting earlier this week.
JioMeet hosts 3.2 lakh users simultaneously
At RIL AGM 2020, JioMeet hit another milestone. The in-house enterprise video calling service managed to host 3.2 lakh users across 42 countries simultaneously. Another reason why Zoom should be nervous about JioMeet’s growing popularity is the overall product experience. JioMeet bears a striking resemblance to Zoom in terms of the overall visual appearance and aesthetics.
Responding to comparisons between Zoom and JioMeet, the Zoom spokesperson earlier said:
“We know what it takes to become the unified communications platform we are today, including the immense amount of work and focus required to create our frictionless user experience, sophisticated security, and scalable architecture.”
Previously, Zoom remained hopeful about its future and existence in India ahead of JioMeet’s arrival in the country. But now that JioMeet is finally here and continues to grow bigger with each passing day, it will be interesting to see how Zoom responds to its new competitor.
